The journey towards sustainable travel

While attention has been focussed on the Covid crisis for over a year, the climate crisis has not gone away. This report is the first in a series of projects looking at how sustainability and the environment feature in people’s transport use and how they might change their behaviour in the future.

We wanted to understand what people know about the issues, what they currently do to be sustainable and how they see the future. We will be following it up with more projects – some looking at general issues and some focussed on more specific areas and modes of transport.

Fieldwork was done in March 2021 – when some Covid restrictions were still in place, so it is particularly interesting to see how people were thinking about their return to ‘normal life’ and transport use after the enforced break in their usual behaviour.
